This month’s selection, Crank by Ellen Hopkins, tells the story of how one summer’s drug use changes the course of honors student Kristina Snow’s life, showing that addiction can strike any
person or family. Kristina is only 16 when she first uses crystal meth, which she dubs “the monster.” Written in hypnotic, broken verse, the novel is loosely based on the struggles of Hopkins’s own daughter. Minimal words and granular details immerse the reader in the psyche of a teenager dealing with drug addiction. A New York Times bestseller, Crank is also regularly featured on banned-book lists for its depictions of addiction and sex.
