  • OWL Grades Mandatory Parent Meeting

    September 15, 2024  12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
    RE Meeting Room

OWL: Lifespan Sexuality Education, Grades 7-8 Mandatory Parent Meeting
Sunday, September 15, Noon, RE Meeting Room
RSVP to Jesi Laughlin at DLRE@peoriaUUchurch.org
Our Whole Lives is a progressive approach to sexuality education that deals with the totality of human sexuality in a developmentally appropriate manner. It is based firmly on the values of self-worth, sexual health, responsibility, justice, and inclusivity. As a result, the program reflects a commitment to gender equity and the inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues, which are often excluded from traditional curricula. Criteria for sexually healthy relationships are clearly laid out as yardsticks for making decisions. Our Whole Lives helps young people adopt these human values, and it provides them with information and skills they need for life.
At this mandatory parent meeting, we will introduce the OWL instructors, provide an overview of the program and its underlying values, identify a broad definition of human sexuality, identify ways parents/guardians can support their children’s participation in the program, and share how we will support parents/guardians in their role as sexuality educators for their children.
Sessions will take place on Sundays from 10:30am-2pm on Sept. 29, Oct. 6, 20 & 27, Nov. 3 & 17, Jan. 12, 19 & 26, and Feb. 2. Families can sign up to provide lunch.

    Date with Death Club
Tues., Sept. 17, 4-6pm, Conference Room & Zoom at https://tinyurl.com/488xwtjd
Do you hope to face human mortality with less fear and more curiosity? With less euphemism and more reality? With less conformity and more creativity? If that sounds like you or who you hope to become, welcome to Date with Death Club, where we explore topics of aging, death, and dying. Attend one, some, or all sessions.
This month, our topic is “Resistance & Acceptance: The Mortal Dance.” Our attitude toward our mortality dances between resistance (“Do not go gentle into that good night”) and   acceptance (“No one gets out of here alive”). We will use music and reflection to explore death anxiety and the new science around the use of psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”) to help ease the fear of death in those with terminal   diagnoses.

Great UU Book Sale ~ Donate Now!
    Saturday, Oct. 5, 8am-3pm
    Sunday, Oct. 6, 9:30-10:30am (UUCP Members)12-2pm (Community)
UUs are known to be readers, and we frequently acquire lots of books. The time is fast approaching when you can make room for more books and help the church at the same time—a win-win for sure!
This is a fundraiser for the church and is an important part of the annual budget. Here’s how you can help:

    1. Donate books starting right now. Please put them in the Jr. High room in the RE area any time the church is open. We do not accept encyclopedias, textbooks, VHS tapes, 8-track tapes, and travel or science/medical books that are more than five years old.

    2. Volunteer to help set up, run the sale, and/or clean up afterwards. Sign up here-https://uuchurch.flocknote.com/signup/178117 or on   the sign-up sheet in the church foyer, or look for a smiling church member circulating at coffee hour. It’s a great chance to make new friends, help the church, and get a preview of the books you want to buy!
